يسعى هذا الكتاب لتبيان مفهوم الثقافة حيث يعتبر مفهوم الثقافة ملازماً للعلوم الاجتماعية, وهو ضروري لها الى حد ما, للتفكير حول وحدة البشرية من خلال التنوع بشكل يختلف عن التفكير المستند الى البيولوجيا. ويبدو أن هذا المفهوم يقدم أكثر الأجوبة إقناعاً على سؤال الفارق بين الشعوب, وذلك لأن الجواب العرقي أخذ يفقد من قيمته شيئاً فشيأً مع تطور علم الوراثة البشري. ولم يكن بالإمكان عرض كل الاستخدامات في هذا الكتاب التي عرفها مفهوم الثقافة في العلوم الانسانية والاجتماعية. وقد فضل الحديث هنا عن علم الاجتماع والأنثروبولوجيا لكن فروعاً أخرى تلجأ الى مفهوم الثقافة مثل علم النفس ولا سيما علم النفس الاجتماعي والتحليل النفسي واللسانيات والتاريخ والاقتصاد الخ. وبعيداً عن العلوم الاجتماعية فإن مفهوم الثقافة يستخدم, على وجه الخصوص, من قبل الفلاسفة. ولأننا لا نستطيع أن نكون شاملين فقد بدا مشروعاً الاكتفاء بعدد من المنجزات الأساسية في التحليل الثقافي. ومن أهم محتويات الكتاب ما يلي: الأصل الاجتماعي لكلمة ثقافة وفكرتها, اختراع المفهوم العلمي للثقافة, انتصار مفهوم الثقافة, دراسة العلاقات بين الثقافات وتجديد مفهوم الثقافة, التراتبات الاجتماعية والتراتبات الثقافية, الثقافة والهوية, الرهانات والاستخدامات الاجتماعية لمفهوم الثقافة.
دوني كوش: أستاذ الإتنولوجيا في جامعة السوربون كلية العلوم الإنسانية و الاجتماعية باريس, درس في جامعة الجزائر في عام 1976 و هو الآن باحث في مخبر الإتنولوجيا بجامعة السوربون.
