في كتابه هذا يوضح الدكتور "بسام قطوس" ما معناه قدرة القارئ على محاورة النص المكتوب ومفاوضته وكشف أسراره وهو ما أسماه "ما فوق النص وما تحته أو ما وراءه". لأجل ذلك استند الكاتب إلى مرتكزين نقديين مهمين: الأول: تأصيلي تنظيري يركز على مفهوم "تمنع النص" ويستمد معطياته من الفكر النقدي العربي والعالمي، ويتخذ من عبد القاهر الجرحاني (471هـ) مرجعية أولى. والثاني: إجرائي تطبيقي يسعى إلى تطبيق المفهوم النقدي على النص الشعري، ومتجاوزاً القسمة الجائزة للشعر بين قديم وحديث. وفي هذا السياق يستوي برأي الكاتب نص المتنبي ودرويش إبداعاً، ويتقاطع نص الغارض وصلاح عبد الصبور إغواء، ويتماهى نص ديك الجن وأمل دنقل إغراء بحثاً عما يمتع ويلذ... ويصبح المعنى ما هو يشكله الكاتب والقارئ من نص أو سياق يتشكل عبر حوار مثمر بين ثقافة الناس وثقافة القارئ ورؤيتها الفكرية، ويصير المعنى هو ما تشكله الثقافة. إن ما يميز كاتب هذا النص "بسام قطوس" أنه يوجه إلى قارئه رسالة يقول له فيها أنه لا يكفي أن تتعامل مع هذا الكم الهائل من المعرفة الإنسانية والنقدية بإحدى طريقتين: إما الرفض والإزدراء، أو التقديس والتبجيل. إذ برأيه لا يمكن للتراث مهما عظم أن يجيب عن كل أسئلتنا، وفي الوقت نفسه، وإن في بعض تراثنا النقدي من الغنى والأصالة الشيء المهم الذي يمكن الباحثين الجادين... ما يواصلون البناء عليه للتقدم نحو رؤية نقدية...
