ها هو ذا كتاب أخبار القضاة لوكيع، يعرض للناس لأول مرة بعد أن بقي محجباً في بطون الغيب، واحتجزته خزائن الكتب، أحقاباً طوالاً لا يحصيها عد، وهو ليس بالكتاب الذي يحمل المعاني التي يشير إليها عنوانه فحسب، فهو ليس بمجموعة لأحكام القضاة الذي وصل إلى المؤلف علمهم، وانتهى إليه خبرهم، وإنما هو كتاب أدب ولغة، وكتاب تاريخ وقصص، وهو صورة للحياة السياسية التي مثل الكتاب عصرها، وهو تبيان للأوضاع والأحداث التي كانت تعج بها الدولة الإسلامية في عصورها الاولى، فهو مورد للمؤرخ والباحث، كما هو مورد للفقيه والقاضي، في عبارة طيّعة وبيان رائع، وهو حافل يتراجم كثير من القضاة ورجال الحديث الذين يعز وجود ترجمة شافية لهم في غير هذا الكتاب.
وفي الكتاب معنى امتاز به عن كثر من الكتب التي عرضت لموضوع تاريخ القضاة وأخبارهم مثل الكندي ومن لف لِفْه، ذلك أن أولئك كتبوا تاريخ القضاة في أمصار خاصة، كان كل وكدهم العناية بها مع شيء من الإختصار، وفي شيء غير قليل من الجفاف ونقص الطلاوة في التعبير.
أما وكيع مؤلف كتابنا الذي نقدمه اليوم، فقد أربى عليهم في هذا الباب، فقد كتب أخبار القضاة في جميع الأمصار الإسلامية في ثلاثة القرون التي سبقت وفاته، أي من صدر الإسلام إلى نهاية العصر العباسي الذهبي حسبما عرف من أخبار وصلت إليه، أو وقعت تحت بصره، لم يخص قطراً دون آخر، ولا مصراً دون غيره، كتب ذلك في نقد وفي تحليل، يعطيك فكرة عن عقل الرجل ونظرته للحوادث، وفي بيان فياض ولغة رائعة.
