يمثل هذا الكتاب دراسة فريدة وشاملة عن كشوف الغرب ومغامراتهم في أرض جزيرة العرب. كان هوجرث من خريجي جامعة أوكسفورد في عالم الآثار ومحافظاً لمتحف الآشموليان فيها. نقب في المشرق مع عالم الآثار آرثر إيفنز ثم عمل معاوناً للورنس العرب إبان الحرب العالمية الأولى في المكتب العربي بالقاهرة برتبة مقدم ( كوماندر) وشغل منصب رئيس الجمعية الحغرافية الملكية 1925–1927. يعدّ كتابه هذا مرجعاً مهماً لكل الدارسين والمهتمين برحلات رحالة الغرب في جزيرة العرب واستكشافاتهم.
