يرصد الكتاب أهمَّ الأفكار والنظريّات العلمية والأدبية والفنيّة التي كان لها دور رئيس في تغيير نظرتنا إلى العالم، أو في تغيير أسلوبنا في التعامل معه. وقد حاول الكتاب أن يقدّم الأفكار بشكل مبسّط لا ينفر منه القارىء غير المختص، بل يحضّه الفضول على اكتشاف مزيد، كما نحاول عرضه بجمل مكثّفة لا يملّ المختص من قراءتها وإن كانت لا تقدّم له أي جديد من حيث الأفكار التي برزت عند المفكرين، وإنما قُدمت بأسلوب مختلف، وعبر تسلسل زمني يعتمد تاريخ ولادة المفكرين الذين يرد ذكرهم فيه. وذلك من دون النظر إلى تصنيفاتهم في كتب أخرى ذاتِ فكر غربي وآخر شرقي وثالث عربي. وإنما نظن أن الحضارة ميراث إنساني يرث اللاحق معطياتها عن السابق من دون أن نأخذ بالاعتبار هوية الوارث أو المورث.
ونحن لا نطمح من وراء كتابنا هذا أن نغير التاريخ، بل جلّ ما نأمله أن تقرؤوه بإمعان عندما يقع بين أيديكم، وأن يحفزكم على مزيد من التفكير من دون أن تملوه حتى تنتهوا منه.
