إنَّ التاريخَ علمٌ يُبْحثُ فيه عن معرفة أحوال الجماعات وبُلدانهم ورسُومِهم وعاداتهم وصَنائعهم وأنسابهم ووفَياتهم، وموضوعـه أحوالُ الأشخاصِ الماضيـةِ؛ من الأنبيـاء والأولياء والعلماء والحكماء والشعراء والملوك والسَّلاطين وغيرِهم، والغرضُ منه الوقوفُ على الأحوالِ الماضيةِ من حيث هِيَ وكما كانت.
ولكتب التاريخِ وأخبارِه فوائـدُ كثيرة، ومنافـعُ دنيويةٌ وأُخْرويةٌ جمَّةٌ غزيرة.
وهذا كتابٌ نفيسٌ حاوٍ للفوائدِ الدُّنيوية والأُخروية جمعاً، للإِمام العلاَّمة مُجير الدِّين العُلَيميِّ الحنبلي، وَسَمه بـ ’التَّاريخ المعتبر في أنباء مَنْ غَبر‘ ذَكَر فيه من الحوادث العجيبة والوقائع الغريبة والعبر، وأخبارِ مَنْ فات ومَنْ حضر، ما ترتاحُ لسماعـه القلوب، وما يزُول عن مطالعه ما يجـده من الهمِّ والكُروب، أوردَ فيـه أخبـارَ الأنبيـاءِ وأحـوالَ الأممِ والملوكِ، وذكر تراجمَ الأعيانِ من الصَّحابة والتابعين والأئمة المَرْضيين، مُعرِّجاً على ذكر الحكماء والصُّلحاء والشعراء، مُؤْثراً في سرده الاختصار، على التطويل والإكثار، بأسلوب سهلٍ بعيدٍ عن التعقيد في ذكر الأحداث، مبوِّباً لذلك أحسنَ تبويب.
فقد ابتدأ كتابَه بقصص الأنبياء؛ ثم ذكرَ أممَ اليهودِ والنَّصارى والهنـد والسِّند والسُّودان وغيرِهم، حاكياً فيها الأمـور العِجَـاب، مُورداً جملةً من الإسرائيليات على سبيل التحلِّي بها والتندُّر، لا على سبيل الاستشهاد والاحتجاج.
ثم ذكـر سيـرةَ النبيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بأسلوبٍ مختصَـرٍ مَلِيح، ثم أتى على ذكر الخُلفاء الراشدين الأربعـةِ وما جرى في خلافاتهم من وقائعَ وأحداثٍ، ثم أَتْبعهم بذكر خلفاءِ بني أميةَ، ثم خلفاءِ بني العبَّاس، ثم ذكر خلفاءَ الدَّولةِ الفاطميَّـة، والخلفاءَ من بني العباس بالديار المصرية، وأخبارَ ملوكِ سلاطينِ الأيوبيين والمماليكِ حتى سلطنةِ قايتباي الظاهري سنةَ إحدى وتسع مئة.
سارداً في أثناء ذلك كلِّه لُمعـاً من أخبارهم وأحوالهم ومواليدهم ووفيـاتهم، وما جـرى في ولاياتهم وسَلْطَنَاتهم من وقائـعَ وأحـداث، بذكرِها على ترتيب السَّنوات حَسْبَ الإمكان، وبذلك ينتهي الجزءُ الأول من كتابه.
ثم أفردَ الجزءَ الثاني منـه بذكر تراجمِ الأعيانِ من الأئمـة الأربعـة وغيـرِهم من التـابعين والعلمـاء الأعلام والرؤساء والوزراء والشـعـراء والقضاة على وجه الاختصار مُرَتَّبين على حروفِ المُعْجَم من غير التزامٍ بترتيب الأسماء في كلِّ حرف كما ذَكَـر، معرِّفاً باسم المتـرجَم وتاريخِ وَفاته وذكرِ شيء مِنْ سيرتـه إن تيسَّر على وجه الاختصار، جامعاً ما يزيد على ستِّ مئة عَلَم.
