تتلخص أهمية نشر أويتنغ للنصوص النبطية من الحجر، في أنه حسَّن في طريقة نسخها، وأنه أولى قراءة الأعداد فيها عناية خاصة، ثم إنه التفت إلى خطها، فنبَّه إلى أن بذرة الخط العربي تكمن في خط هذه النقوش، ثم إنه استعان في التعليق على النقوش، وخاصة على أسماء الأعلام فيها، بصديقه تيودور نولدكه Theodor Nöldeke، المستشرق الألماني صاحب الكعب العالي في دراسة اللغات السامية، فتجد تعليقاته منثورة في أرجاء الكتاب كله، وقد استعان فيها بمعرفته الواسعة باللغات السامية، وبالعربية خاصة، ثم إن نولدكه أضاف فصلاً في الكتاب بعنوان "ملاحظات على النقوش النبطية"، أدرج فيه ملاحظاته على لغة النقوش وإملائها، ولعل من أهم ما خلص إليه نظره اللغوي في نقوش الحجر هو أنه بيَّن صلتها بالعربية، فالقول الذي ما ينفك الباحثون يرددونه اليوم، وهو أن الأنباط عرب، في لغتهم وأسمائهم، إنما يرجع في أساسه إلى ما كان نولدكه قاله في هذا الكتاب.
