يندرج هذا الكتاب – الأطروحة ضمن دراسة قضايا الديمغرافيا التاريخية، والتحديات التي تطرحها الكوارث الديمغرافية على الهياكل الاجتماعية. وهو حقل معرفي لم يحظَ باهتمام الدارسين، وعانى طويلاً التهميش والإقصاء.
لقد عُني المؤلِّف بظاهرة الموت الجماعي التي تحوّلت من ظاهرة عامة خلال العصور الوسطى إلى ظاهرة طاعونية، في الأساس، ابتداء من منتصف القرن الرابع عشر، وسلّط الضوء على ظاهرة وباء الطاعون، لا باعتبار الموت الجماعي، أو الموتان (على الأصح)، الناتج منه وهو الأكثر انتشاراً وفتكاً فحسب، بل باعتباره، أيضاً قد أقام الدنيا ولم يقعدها لمئات السنين، لما أدّى إليه من إقحام لكلٍّ من "الخاصة" والنخب الفكرية والسياسية، وكذلك "العامة" في مجالات نظرية وممارسات تطبيقية أثارت بدورها زوبعة من الخلافات النظرية، فقهية كانت أو طبية.
كما تمّت دراسة هذه الظاهرة الطاعونية في الإطار المكاني، فقد اعتمد المؤلف الفضاء المغاربي، مع التوسع والانفتاح على الفضاء المشارقي كلّما كانت هناك حاجة سببية إلى ذلك ، وتالياً، كلما اقتضت المقارنة.
فأهمية هذا الكتاب، أنه درس ظاهرة الطاعون في أسبابها ونتائجها، في إطار الحراك الاجتماعي والسياسي والديني والطبي؛ فرصد التطور الحاصل في مجال المعرفة الطبية والعلمية وفي الذهنيات بشكل عام، تجاه الموتان، وهو ما اقتضى من المؤلِّف الانتقال من الديمغرافيا التاريخية، ومن دراسة الطاعون والموت، إلى دراسة الهياكل الذهنية والعقليات.
