ولد نبيل سليمان في صافيتا عام 1945، وتلقّى تعليمه في اللاذقية، وحصل على إجازة في اللغة العربية عام 1967.
عمل مدرّساً وأسس دار الحوار للنشر في اللاذقية، حيث تفرّغ للكتابة منذ عام 1990.
بنى الروائي في بداية الثمانينيات، منزلاً في قرية البودي التي تقع على بُعد عشرين كيلومتراً من مدينة جبلة وترتفع 600 متر عن البحر مطلةً على شواطئ بانياس إلى اللاذقية، ونقل مكتبته إلى هناك: «أعيش فيها عزلتي منذ عام 1987 متفرغاً للقراءة والكتابة.
ولا يعرف لذة القراءة والكتابة إلا المتفرغ».
ونبيل سليمان يعرف هذه اللذة منذ عام 1982 حتى اللحظة.
عيّن نبيل مدرِّساً للّغة العربيّة في الرقّة سنة 1969، وأحاط به عدد من الأصدقاء الشيوعيين الذي أثّروا فيه فحملت كتاباته نفَساً ماركسيّاً، جعلت من «كتبة التقارير يظنّونني عضواً في هذا الشقّ أو ذاك».
كما أنّ صداقته التاريخيّة مع بوعلي ياسين، النّاقد لكلّ شيء، عزّزت لدى نبيل سليمان الحسّ النّقدي من كلّ شيء، والعزوف عن الانخراط في الأحزاب.
من ثمار هذه الصّداقة كتابهما المشترك «الأيديولوجيا والأدب في سورية»، الصادر عن دار ابن خلدون، ثمّ خاضا معاً مغامرة الرحيل إلى بيروت في ربيع 1979 تاركَين وراءهما أسرتين، راكضَين خلف الحلم بالعيش في «الفضاء الفلسطيني اللّبناني، وفضاء الثّورة والحرب الأهليّة اللاّهبة».
التقى الكاتبان في لبنان بمهدي عامل ويمنى العيد وماجد أبو شرار وجورج طرابيشي وسعد الله ونّوس وغيرهم، والتقيا كذلك سليمان صبح الذي أسّس دار ابن رشد، وذاع صيتهما سريعاً، ووضع ياسين وسليمان كتاباً آخر مشتركاً ونشراه لدى الدّار بعنوان «معارك ثقافية في سورية».
