شهد العالم في أثناء العقود الثلاثة الماضية، نزاعات وصراعات، وحروباً، كانت الدول النامية في آسيا وأفريقيا ساحات وميادين لها، فدفعت من سكانها، ومن مواردها، ومن مؤسساتها ثمناً بالغاً، لذلك اهتمت منظمات الأمم المتحدة ولا سيما الأسكوا والبرنامج الإنمائي، ومنظمة إدارة النزاعات الدولية، ومنظمة الصحة العالمية بتوثيق البيانات الإجتماعية الناجمة عن تلك النزاعات وتحليلها لما لها من تأثيرات مباشرة في المجتمعات نتيجة لما تثيره تلك النزاعات من أزمات تحّول المجتمعات التي تشهدها إلى مجتمعات مأزومة.
ويعدّ العراق أنموذجاً حياً لبلد أرهقته، وأضنته الحروب، والأزمات المشؤومة، التي ابتدأت معه في حربه مع إيران 1980/9/22م، وانتهت بإحتلاله عام 2003م، ومن البديهي القول إن هذه الحروب والأزمات خلّفت وراءها مجتمعاً مأزوماً، ومفككاً، وممزقاً.
فكان لازماً علينا أن نتحقق بالبحث في مسيرة هذا المجتمع وما تعرض له من أزمات، وتقصي صورها، في محاولة منّا للوقوف على الظروف الحقيقية والعوامل الكامنة التي أسهمت في أزمة المجتمع العراقي، وهذا ما شجّعنا على الرجوع إلى الوراء، لتعّرف الأحداث الرئيسة التي شهدها المجتمع العراقي وتأثيرات تلك الأحداث فيه.
تحاول دراستنا الميدانية هذه أن تحيط بتصورات المبحوثين عن الكلف الإجتماعية التي تكّبدها العراق، وعلى الصعد المختلفة، والمستويات كافة.
اعتمدنا في إنجاز هذه الدراسة منهج المسح الإجتماعي، وبإستخدام أدوات ووسائل عدة في جمع البيانات، وبعض التحليلات والمعاملات الإحصائية التي دعمت الجانب النظري من تلك الدراسة.
