يعد الشريف الرضي أحد كبار الشعراء، ومن أهم فحول شعراء العربية في القرن الرابع الهجري، فقد تميز بغزارة فنّه الشعري، وتفرد بموضوعات نالت شعراء عصره، حتى وضعوه في طليعة شعراء العربية على الإطلاق، إلى جانب المتنبي وأبي تمام من القدامى.
في هذا الكتاب يقدم الدكتور حافظ المنصوري دراسة حول الفن الشعري للشريف الرضي جاءت الدراسة في تمهيد وخمسة فصول، تناول المؤلف في التمهيد (الشاعر والعصر)، أما في الفصل الأول وهو (البناء الفني في شعر الشريف) فتاول فيه مفهوم كلمة (بناء) وتطورها لغة وإصطلاحاً، ثم عناصر بناء القصيدة في النقد القديم والحديث، مروراً بآراء الشريف الرضي النقدية.
وكان الفصل ا لثاني في (الصورة الفنية) ودرس فيه المؤلف أهمية الصورة في الشعر، وما يتصل بها من تعابير "دوافع وإنفعالات" وغيرها مما يعبر عن فلسفة الشاعر في تعامله مع أحداث عصره، وأما الفصل الثالث فجاء بعنوان (الرمز والرمزية) ويتناول مفهموم الرمز عند القدماء، واشهر من أشار إلى ذلك من الدارسين، مؤكداً أن في شعر الشريف الرضي مادةً تجعله رائد الرمزية في الشعر العربي القديم، ولا سيما في موضوع تراسل الحواس.
وأما الفصل الرابع، فحمل عنوان (لغة الشعر عند الشريف الرضي)، ويبدأ بمقدمة عن لغة الشعر والنثر، مع إيضاح الفرق بينهما من خلال عملية التركيب اللغوي للألفاظ وما يتصل بها من مفردات... ويأتي الفصل الخامس والأخير خاصاً بالأسلوب وجاء بعنوان (جماليات الأسلوب) ويدرس فيه المؤلف مسائل امتاز بها أسلوب الشريف (كالإغتراب المكاني) المتمثل في كثرة حجازياته - ثم الإغتراب الروحي وحقيقة الإنتماء، وإغتراب الزمان والمكان... وأخيراً دراسة لموسيقى وإيقاع الشعر عند الشعر عند الشريف الرضي.
