"وفوجئت أولغا بنفسها وهي تفكر بأنها كانت في ذلك الوقت البعيد أكثر سعادة من الآن. فمنذ حوالي أربعين أو خمسين سنة كانت القضيّة الروسية بسيطة جداً. كانت روسيا مجرد بلاد تقع في الشمال الشرقي، وكانت أولغا تكرهها. كان قادتها قتلة تنكروا بزي الحكّام. هذه البلاد عينها أضحت تمثل اليوم شيئاً غامضاً لا يُعرف كنهه: أهي ديموقراطية تتعثر في خطوها أم جمهورية شعبية يُراد منها أن تكون ليبرالية؟ هي وطن منقسم على نفسه. بعض أبنائه يطالبون بالحكم القيصري والبعض الآخر يتحدث عن حقوق الإنسان، وآخرون يشيدون بفضائل الاشتراكية. والمرء يحار وسط هذه البلبلة: هل عليه أن يثق بهذا المزيج من الآمال والندامات المختلطة؟ أم عليه أن يكون حذراً حتى لا يقع تحت سيطرة تلامذة السحرة الذين استولوا على السلطة بالقوة؟".
