هذا الكتاب هو مختصر لكتاب "المقاصد الحسنة"، والمقاصد الحسنة هو كتاب مشهور بحث بتوسع في الأحاديث الدائرة على الألسنة، مرتبة على حروف المعجم، وقد أشار "السخاوي" وهو مصنف الكتاب في مقدمته إلى أنه مسبوق من قبل بعض الأئمة كالزركشي وابن تيمية. كما ذكر في المقدمة أنه إنما كتب هذا الكتاب استجابة لرغبة بعض الأئمة، وكان أعظم باعث له على جمع هذا الكتاب (كثرة التنازع لنقل ما لا يعلم في ديوان، مما لا يسلم عن كذب وهتان، ونسبتهم إلى الرسول، مع عدم خبرتهم بالمنقول...) وقد أورد فيه ما يزيد على الألف من الأحاديث، غذ بلغت عدتها 1356 حديثاً.
ولما كان السخاوي قد أطال في أقول والبيان والتخريج فقد اعتنى الإمام الزرقاني باختصاره واستكماله بعدد من الأحاديث كما واهتم بحذف بعض الاستطرادات والنقول والأشعار التي أثبتها السخاوي في كتابه الأصل "المقاصد الحسنة" وبتعبير آخر نجد أن الزرقاني قد اهتم بإيراد نص الحديث معقباً عليه بالحكم وموجزاً بكلمة، وبحذف ما هو وارد ذلك مما في الأصل.
وبالنظر لما لهذا الكتاب من أهمية فقد اعتنى الدكتور "محمد الصباغ" بتحقيقه شارحاً الألفاظ الغامضة التي تحتاج إلى شرح في الكتاب، مدوناً مقدمة للكتاب أرخ فيها لفن التأليف في الأحاديث المشتهرة على الألسنة، وضابطاً بعد ذلك بالشكل الكامل تقريباً نصوص الأحاديث، ومن ثم اهتم بتخريج عدد من الأحاديث إلى حكم المؤلف عليها بقوله (وارد) وأخيراً اعتنى بصنع فهارس عدة للكتاب.
