وفقاً لمعايير الأمم المتحدة فإن مرحلة الشباب هي المرحلة الإنتقالية بين تبعية الطفولة وتحمل حقوق الواجبات البالغين.
فهي مرحلة التجريب لأدوار ومهام جديدة، وهي العمر بين سن الخامسة عشر والرابعة والعشرين والسن الذي يستعد فيه الشخص لحياة الكبار وتجربة المواطنة الكاملة والمشاركة الفعالة في العمليات الإجتماعية والإقتصادية للمجتمع الذي يعيش فيه، ويتم هذا الإعداد من خلال تعليم وتدريب وخبرة مكتسبة من السنوات الأولى من العمر.
ويتميز الشباب الجامعي بسمات وخصائص نفسية وسلوكية تتمثل في الرغبة في التجديد والقدرة على الإنجاز والمساهمة في إحداث تغيير وكسب المعرفة، وأيضاً هناك القلق والإندفاع والتمرد في بعض الأحيان، والتأثر بالتقاليد وفقاً للإنتشار الثقافي والقيمي والمحلي والعالمي.
وبما أن الإنتماء الديني عنصر أساسي ومكوّن رئيسي في النظام اللبناني وثقافته، وبما أن العلاقة بين أهل الأديان عبر التاريخ شهدت الكثير من الحروب والصراعات والنزاعات والهدف دائماً كان الإلغاء والإقصاء، الأمر الذي أنتج خوفاً من الآخر المختلف في الإيمان والعقيدة.
ورغم كل التطورات التي طالت الكثير من جوانب حياتنا وساهمت في تسهيل التواصل بين الأمم والشعوب، إلا أن الإنتماء الديني بقي سبباً أساسياً للتباعد؛ وبما أن الشباب هم أكثر قطاعات المجتمع تأثيراً بالبيئة التي يعيشون فيها، وبالأفكار التي يتلقونها وهم أيضاً أكثر إستجابة للتغيير.
وعلى ضوء ما سبق حاولت هذه الدراسة إيجاد علاقة بين الإنتماء الديني والمذهبي والقيم والإتجاهات السلوكية لطلاب الجامعات، بالإضافة إلى تصوير ووصف وتشخيص قطاع عريض من قطاعات المجتمع، تعتمد أساساً في تنفيذها على طريقة المسح الإجتماعي.
والمسح الإجتماعي هو أسلوب منظم للحصول على طائفة من المعلومات، والفائدة التي تنطوي عليها طريقة المسح بالنسبة لهذا البحث، إنها تتميز بإتساع وتنوع البيانات، من بيانات شخصية كالأسئلة الخاصة بالجنس والعمر والديانة.
وبناءً عليه، تكونت عينة الدراسة من (340) طالب وطالبة وهم من الدارسين في كليات الجامعات وقد اختيرت العينة بشكل عشوائي كما وزعت الإستمارة على أكثر من (400) طالب وطالبة.
