مدرسة تحسين الخطوط الملكية أنشأها سنة (1922م) الملك فؤاد، وكان روادها في أول نشأتها قليلين، ثم أخذت تنمو رويداً رويداً، حتى صارت بفضل رعاية الملك ثابتة الأركان، كثيرة الرواد، فيها يتعلم الطلاب فنون الخط من الثلث والنسخ والرقعة، والديواني والفارسي والكوفي، وما يتصل بهذه الفنون من الرسم والتذهيب.
وكتاب "الخط العربي من مدرسة تحسين الخطوط الملكية" هو دراسة عن الخط العربي والخطين الديواني والكوفي والتذهيب والكتابة ونشأة الخط، كتبها سبعة مؤلفين في مقالات نشرت في مجلة مدرسة تحسين الخطوط الملكية في العدد الأول (سنة 1362هــ - 1943م) بمصر، وقد جُمعت هذه المقالات في كتاب واحد، مهدّ لها بمقدمة عن أهمية الخط العربي عبر مراحل التاريخ... كانت اللغة العربية تسير والغزاة الفاتحين جنباً إلى جنب، فحيثما فتح المسلمون بلداً توطدت فيه أركان اللغة العربية، وكان الخط الكوفي هو الأداة المتخذة لكتابة ألفاظها وقيد معانيها".
