يوضح هذا الكتاب مدى تحكم المشاعر في حياة الإنسان المعاصر، ويسلط الضوء على الظروف والأسباب التي جعلتها تلعب دوراً مركزياً في جميع مجالات الحياة (الإجتماعية، السياسية، الإقتصادية، الرياضية...)، إلى حد أن الكاتب اعتبر أن المشاعر أصبحت مقدسة ومتخذة شكلاً من أشكال العبادة سماها "عبادة المشاعر": إننا نلج عصر المشاعر حيث يعلن الإنسان المعاصر: "فلتهتز روحي لكل ذبذبات العالم"، وهكذا فإن الأموسابيانس Home Sapiens يترك مكانة للأموسنتيانس Home sentiens".
يقوم الكاتب بتحليل هذه الظاهرة تحليلاً فلسفياً ونفسياً، ويقسمها إلى نوعين: المشاعر الهائجة والمنفعلة التي سماها مشاعر الصدمة، والمشاعر الهادئة والتأملية التي سماها مشاعر الإحساس.
ينتقد الكاتب كون الإنسان المعاصر أصبح يفضل مشاعر الصدمة: "حياتنا العاطفية تعاني من إختلال راجع إلى الإفراط في مشاعر الصدمة والنقص في مشاعر التأمل"، ويخلص إلى ضرورة الرجوع إلى مشاعر الإحساس.
