"إن المتفرج الذي يجلس في مقعده، ويشاهد التمثيل، ويتجول في الأروقة يظل في حالة جهالة مطبق بالقسم الأكبر من المبنى الذي دخل إليه.
إذن فقد وضع المؤلف، وهو أستاذ تاريخ المسرح في المعهد الفني للفن المسرحي في باريس، كتابه هذا متوجهاً إلى جمهور المسرح أكثر من الممثلين، مستهدفاً تنوير هذا الجمهور عن كل ما يتعلق بفن التمثيل المسرحي منذ أن تتكون المسرحية في ذهن المؤلف إلى أن تمثل أمام الجمهور، ماراً بجميع المراحل التي تجتازها.
فيتكلم بتفصيل ودقة، في فصول سبعة، عن المؤلف والنص، وتجارب التمثيل (البروفات) قبل العرض، والإخراج، ثم يتحدث عن الممثلين وأنواعهم وإعدادهم، متطرقاً إلى النواحي الإدارية في علاقاتهم بالفرقة، أو بالمسرح، متكلماً عن عقود العمل وتقاسم الأرباح، والرواتب، ثم يعكف على مبنى المسرح فيتحدث مطولاً عن حلبة التمثيل، وعن القاعة وملحقاتها، وهندستها، ومكاتب الإدارة، والمستودعات، ومخازن الملابس ومقاعد المتفرجين على أنواعها.
ثم يتحدث عن الديكور وتاريخه، وعن الملابس وعن الضجة المصطنعة، والموسيقى، والآليات التي تحرك الديكور، والإضاءة، وقضايا الرؤية والسمع في المسرح، ثم يتحدث عن الكوميدي -فرانسيز بالذات، وعن بعض المسارح الأخرى.
من هذا العرض البسيط يدرك القارئ شمول هذه الدراسة الممتعة التي جمعت فأوعت، وتناولت كل كبيرة وصغيرة في تقنية المسرح بالدرس المسهب فأوضحتها بلغة سهلة، وعرضتها على القارئ مبسطة، موجزة سهلة المأخذ في آن واحد.
