"بهجة النفوس وتحليها بمعرفة مالها وما عليها هو شرح لمختصر البخاري "جمع النهاية في بدء الخير والغاية" كتاب يحتوي على جمل من درر فرائض الشريعة وسننها ورغائبها وآدابها وأحكامها والإشارة إلى الحقيقة بحقيقتها، والإشارة إلى كيفية الجمع بين الحقيقة والشريعة وتبيين الطرق الناجية التي أشار عليه السلام إليها، والإشارة إلى بيان أضدادها والتحذير عنها، وربما استدل المؤلف على بعض الوجوه التي ظهرت من الحديث بآي وبأحاديث تناسبها وتقويها؛ فمنها باللفظ ومنها بالمعنى، متبعاً ذلك بحكايات ليشحذ الفهم بها وليتبين بها المعنى، وربما مشيراً في بعض المواضع إلى شيء من توبيخ النفس على غفلتها لعلها تنتهي عن غيّها، وبالإضافة إلى ذلك أودع المؤلف شيئاً من بيان طريقة الصحابة وآدابها وما يستنبط من حسن عباراتهم وتحرزهم في نقلهم وحسن مخاطبتهم ومما يستنبط من ذلك من آداب الشريعة إذا تعرض لفظ الحديث لشيء من ذلك؛ لأنه لا ينبغي أن يغفل عن شيء من ذلك؛ لأنهم هم الصفوة المقربون الذين كانوا يحترمون الحديث أعظم الاحترام يستنبطون من ألفاظه وحروفه أحكاماً يبنون عليها قواعد مذاهبهم.
وبالنسبة لكتاب "بهجة النفوس" فقد كان من متضمنه إشارة إلى تكثير فوائد أحاديث كتاب شرح لمختصر البخاري، وتعميم محاسنه. ويقول المؤلف بأنه ولما كان الإمام صاحب الأصل وهو البخاري جعل لكل وجه مما يدل على الحديث الواحد باباً، ولربما كرر الحديث الواحد، في أبواب شتى مراراً، ولربما قطع الحديث الواحد، وأتى في كل باب منه بقدر الحاجة إليه، فرأى المؤلف أن يجعل في كتابه "بهجة النفوس..." كل حديث من تلك الأحاديث التي جمعت بنفسه مقام باب، مفتاحه ظاهر الحديث، والأبواب التي تتفرع منه وجوه تتبعه، متتبعاً ألفاظ الحديث، ليقتبس من تلك الألفاظ العذبة الزلال، ما يكون منه رياً لظمأ جهالات الفؤاد، لأنه عليه السلام، لا يكون منه زيادة حرف، أو نقص حرف من الحروف، إلا لمعنى مفيد، لأنه لا ينطق عن الهوى.
اختصر ابن أبي جمرة "صحيح البخاري" فانتقى منه 297 حديثا من أبوابها، ثم شرح هذا المختصر في "بهجة النفوس" فهو يبين ما يستفاد من الحديث من: أحكام فقهية، وآداب شرعية مقسما كلامه في الحديث إلى وجوه مكثرا منها . وبعد بيان أحكام الشريعة يتكلم على الحقيقة بمعنى ما يؤخذ من الأحاديث في تهذيب النفس. وهو كتاب عظيم القدر وقد ختم الكتاب بالرؤى التي رآها المؤلف عند شرحه لأحاديث البخاري، وهي سبعون رؤية سماها المرائي الحسان.
