شهدت العقود الثلاثة الماضية نهضة - طفْرة - علمية وتكنولوجية، مما استدعى تسميتها فترة إنفجار المعلومات، فأصبح العالمَ الواسع كأنه قرية صغيرة تتناقل العلم والمعرفة بسرعة قياسيّة، وبخاصة بعد إدخال "الإنترنت" (شبكة المعلومات العالميّة Internet) مجال العمل الميداني اليومي، لكن التحديات التي يواجهها العالم العربي كثيرة ومتنوعة، بل خطيرة أحياناً بحيث لا يمكن مواجهتها إلاّ بالعلم وتقنياته، فاستوجب على المهتمّين بأمور اللغة، وبالذات، تلك المؤسسات والمجاميع العلميّة والثقافية مجاراة تلك النهضة ومواكبة هذا التطور المتسارع وخدمته.
ومن هنا، جاءت أهمية المعاجم العلمية في جعل اللغة العربية غير قاصرة لمواجهة سَيْل وتدفّق المصطلحات العلمية الحديثة، وبالتالي معالِم حضارة الألفية الثالثة.
ولقد جاء هذا "المعجم العلميّ" بعد جهد طويل وعناء دؤوب شارك في صياغته مجموعة كبيرة من الزملاء والأساتذة، وبعد مراجعةٍ وتدقيق لمراجع ومصادر وحوليّات علميّة وثقافية متنوعة.
