يعتبر هذا التطبيق الأول والأفضل في عالم تطبيقات الجداول الإلكترونية. وهذا الكتاب يقود لتعلم هذا التطبيق الذي يقدم المزايا التالية: حفظ وتنظيم وحساب وتحليل ورسم خريطة معلومات تجارية رقمية أو معلومات شخصية على شكل ورقة عمل Spreadsheet (صف أو عمود), مثال ذلك حساب مصرفي بالشيكات, تحضير الفواتير, تخطيط ميزانية, تتبع طلبات الزبائن, متابعة دفتر حسابات الأستاذ. كما يخزن نص بسيط نسبياً أو معلومات حسابية ضمن قوائم, تنظم هذه القوائم المعلومات على شكل سجلات ( صفوف) وحقول ( أعمدة). مثال ذلك: مخزون البضائع أو وصف أعضاء فريق سباق التزلج الذي ينتسب إليه. يرتب إكسل المعلومات ويبحث عنها ويصفيها ويملؤها بشكل تلقائي ويلخصها ويرسم الخطوط العريضة لها ويجمع الحسابات. ويقوم بنشر أوراق ساكنة أو تفاعلية أو مخططات بيانية أو جداول محورية Pivot لإظهار معلومات حسابية أو نصية أو رسومية على ويب, ونشر نماذج على ويب لجمع المعلومات في قوائم أو في قواعد بيانات أخرى. ويبين التعامل مع بياناتXML, كفتح مستنداتXML واستيرادها الىEXcel ثم تصديرها مرة أخرى ليصبح EXcel تطبيقاً متكاملاً لتحرير مستنداتXML.
