في هذا الكتاب يعالج الدكتور "المهدي أمبيرش" علاقة مفهوم التاريخ والحضارة بالفلسفة بإعتبارها مشروعاً مفهومياً منفتحاً على المعنى؛ ومن خلال هذه المعالجة يقرأ الكاتب أطروحة "فوكوياما" في نهاية التاريخ والإنسان الأخير، ثم يضع سؤال "ما" مفصولاً من حيث الظاهر عن التاريخ أي البحث في دلالة ما التي ستقودنا إلى البحث في التاريخ والذي يقود هو الآخر!؟ البحث في معطيات الفعل التاريخي أي الإنسان، والوعي، والإرادة والفعل، ثم علاقة الفعل بالمحدود المكاني والزماني، وبالإنسان بإعتباره محدوداً... ثم يبحث في الوعي بالتاريخ بإعتباره عملية إصلاح...
يعتبر الكاتب أن منهج التفكير الأوروبي المعاصر والذي تأسس على المنهج الأعجمي القديم، ضروري لإيضاح منهج التفكير العربي لمعالجة هذه الأزمة بالمفهوم الفلسفي، والذي "يعتبر إنعكاسه على الدين هو موقف يؤسس على هذا المنهج، أي أن له نتاج وليس علة... وكل ذلك يرتبط بالسؤال الماهدي حول التاريخ؟".
تأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب من كونه يكشف عن الفرق في مفاهيم التاريخ والحضارة والفلسفة، في الفكر الأوروبي عنه في الفكر العربي ومنه ما استند إليه "فوكوياما" في دراسته عن التاريخ، مبيناً الكاتب التناقضات في النظرية ويرد عليها... كل ذلك سنجده مفصلاً وموضحاً عند قراءتنا لمشروع الدكتور "أمبيرش" الذي جاء رداً على نهاية التاريخ التي طرحها الياباني "فوكوياما"...
