يتضح التدريس الفعّال من خلال العلاقة بين الأنشطة التعليمية التي يقوم بها المدرس والناتج النهائي الذي يظهر على سلوك طلبته وتغيير السلوك الغير مرغوب.
فالتدريس نشاط تواصلي يهدف إلى إثارة التعلم وتسهل تحقيقه ويتضمن سلوك التدريس مجموعة من الأفعال التواصلية والقرارات التي يتم إستثمارها، وتوظيفها بكيفية مقصودة من المدرس الذي يعمل كونه وسيطاً أدار موقف تربوي وتعليمي، ومعرفة المدرس الواسعة بطرائق التدريس وإستراتيجيات التعليم المتنوعة وقدرته على إستخدامها تساعده في معرفة الظروف التدريسية المناسبة للتطبيق بحيث تصبح عملية التعليم شائقة وممتعة للطلبة ومناسبة لقدراتهم، ووثيقة الصلة بحياتهم اليومية وإحتياجاتهم وميولهم ورغباتهم وتطلعاتهم المستقبلية.
والتدريس في ميادين التربية والتعليم مستعمل بشكل واسع، لكنه قد لا يثير معنى محدداً في ذهن من يستعمله، فالمعنى يقترن عادة بخبرة الشخص الذي يستعمل هذا المصطلح والموقف الذي هو فيه، والهمة التي يقصدها.
أن الطريقة بمعناها الضيق تكون عبارة عن خطوات محددة يتبعها المدرس لتحفيظ المتعلمين أكبر قدر ممكن من المادة العلمية الدراسية.
وهنا تكون الطريقة وسيلة لوضع الخطط وتنفيذها في مواقف الحياة، الطبيعية بحيث يكون الصف الدراسي جزءاً من الحياة ويجري في سياقها، وينمو الطالب فيها بتوجيه من المدرس وإرشاده، لذلك قيل أن الطريقة تعني ترتيب الظروف الخارجية وتنظيمها وإستعمال الأساليب التعليمية الملائمة لهذا الترتيب والتنظيم بحيث يؤدي إلى الإتصال الجيد مع المتعلمين لتمكينهم من التعلم.
