هذا الكتاب يُعتبرَ مشروع جان بيلمان نوبل في النقد النفسي المعاصر من المشروعات الأكثر أهمية في الربع الأخير من القرن العشرين وبداية الألفية الجديدة، وذلك بفضل نوعية القراءات المقترحة، ويفضل تلك الجدة في التصور النصري والمنهجي الذي كان يصاحب دوماً تلك القراءات، في حوارٍ متواصلٍ: من جهةٍ أولى، مع مختلف "علوم النص"؛ ومن جهة ثانية، مع نظريات التحليل النفسي المعاصر، ولهذا، هو سيبقى مشروعاً يتطور ويتجدد، لا يدعي الإكتمال، ولكنه لم يكن يركن إلى الجمود.
وتعود أهمية كتاب: التحليل النفسي والأدب إلى أنه المؤلَّف النظريُّ الأساسُ الذي وضع اللبنات الأولى لهذه المقاربة النفسانية الجديدة والمتجددة التي اشتهر بها جان بيلمان نوبل: التحليل النصي (Textanalyse) فهذا المؤلَّف في مجموعة عبارة عن قراءةٍ تقويميةٍ نقديةٍ في تاريخ العلاقة بين التحليل النفسي والأدب، تنتهي إلى إقتراح مقاربة نفسانية تريد أن تكون جديدة مغايرة جذرياً للمقاربات النفسانية التقليدية، مركِّزة على التحليل الذي يختار النصَّ الأدبي، لا مؤلِّفَه، موضوعاً للتحليل؛ فالمحلِّل النصِّي (Textanalyste)، على عكس الناقد النفسي التقليدي، يضع المؤلِّف -- الإنسانَ جانباً، مستهدفاً بإنشاءَ مقاربة نفسانية للنصوص الأدبية تنطلق من أن لكل نصٍّ لاوعيّه، بمعنى أن النصَّ الأدبيَّ يكون معمولاً بواسطة خطابٍ لاواعٍ، وأنه من الممكن وصف هذا العمل أن النصَّ الأدبي يكون معمولاً بواسطة خطابٍ لاواعٍ، وأنه من الممكن وصف هذا العمل الذي يتحقق داخل النص، وخاصة إذا انتقلنا من التحليل البيوغرافي إلى التحليل النصي.
وهكذا، فقد أعاد جان بيلمان نويل، في هذا الكتاب، مساءلة العلاقة بين التحليل النفسي والأدب بطريقةٍ تجمع بين التاريخ والنقد، بمعنى أنه استحضر تاريخ هذه العلاقة من سيغموند فرويد إلى جان لاكان، ولم يكتف بالعرض التاريخيِّ قدر ما قام بقراءةٍ تاريخيةٍ تقويميةٍ، انتهى من خلالها إلى إقتراح التحليل النصِّي بديلاً يسمح بالإنتقال من الإهتمام بمؤلِّف العمل الإبداعي إلى تركيز النظر على العمل الأدبي نفسه.
