يدافع هذا الكتاب عن فكرة محورية مفادها أن العجيب ركن أصيل في الرحلة ومركز إهتمام الرحالة والمتلقي معاً، نظراً لإرتباط السفر عموماً بتتبع الإختلاف ورصد المخالف والمفارق.
ومن ثم، تعتبر الرحلات صلة وصل بين الثقافات المختلفة والمتباينة، حيث تُعنى بتحديد الفروق بين الشعوب والمجتمعات، كما تستمد أهميتها وضرورتها في الآن ذاته من طبيعة الحياة القائمة على الحركة والتحوّل، وبذلك يصبح البحث في أدب الرحلات، كما هو الحال مع هذه الدراسة، بحثاً عن العجيب والغريب والخارق، بكل ما تحمله هذه الألفاظ من حمولات ثقافية وطاقات جمالية وإمكانات إبداعية.
تذهب هذه الدراسة إلى أن أصحاب الرحلات لم يزينوا نصوصهم ببعض العجائب إستجابة لذوق القارئ الميَّال إلى العجيب والغريب فحسب، وإنما كذلك لأن ما رآه الرحالة كان شيئاً عجيباً حقاً بالنسبة إليه، وبذلك لم تكن الغاية من تدوين الرحالة، إبداع عالم عجيب، بقدر ما كانت التعجب من العالم الموجود.
ومما تلاحظه هذه الدراسة أن بعض الرحلات تعلن إنفتاحها على العجيب والغريب بدءاً من عتبة العنوان ومروراً بما في النص الرئيس من كثافة لحقل العجيب وإنتهاء بما تتركه من إنطباع لدى القارئ، وبذلك، يمارس العجيب فتنته وسحره على الرحالة والمتلقي.
تشكل هذه الدراسة إضافة نوعية إلى مكتبة الأبحاث في أدب الرحلة، وعليه ارتأت لجنة التحكيم أنها تستحق عن جدارة جائزة ابن بطوطة لأدب الرحلة، فرع الدراسات.
