رشدي راشد (1936- )رياضي مصري وفيلسوف ومؤرخ يعيش في فرنسا منذ 1956 ويعمل أستاذًا بجامعة دوني دويدرو وعدد من جامعات العالم.
حقق رشدي راشد كتب علماء العرب الرياضيين وترجم المخطوطات العربية إلى الفرنسية وشرحها تاريخيًا وفلسفيًا ورياضيًا وعلق عليها . كما أعاد إحياء تراث ابن الهيثم والخوارزمي والكِندي وعمر الخيام والسموأل وقدم عنهم حقائق تاريخية لم تكن معروفة من قبل.

يحقق الدكتور رشدي راشد في هذا الكتاب الأعمال الرياضية لشرف الدين الطوسي (ما وصل منها إلى عصرنا) ويشرحها باللغة الرياضية المفهومة حالياً، ويعلق عليها تفصيلاً. وأهم هذه الأعمال هي رسالة الطوسي المسمّاة "المعادلات" التي يشير المؤلف إلى أن الكتاب مخصص لها، ويشرح الأسباب التي جعلتها تمتنع على التحقيق والدراسة من قبل. وهو ينطلق من هذا التحقيق لكي نضع الرسالة في المكان الذي يعود إليها ضمان المسار الذي يمثل تطور الجبر عبر الزمن.
وهناك أمران قد تفيد الإشارة إليهما في تلمّس محتوى هذا الكتاب: 1-يقدم الدكتور رشدي راشد دراسة معمقة لرياضيات شرف الدين الطوسي، للدوافع التي قادته إلى طرقه الهندسية-التحليلية، لوسائله الجبرية المتطورة ولاستدعائه الوسائل والمفاهيم التحليلية، كما يقدم تحليلاً لطرق شرف الدين الطوسي العددية في الحساب التقريبي للجذور. 2-يقدّم المؤلف رسماً للمنحى الهندسي لتطور الجبر بدءاً بالخوارزمي والماهاني والخازن والبيروني وأبي نصر بن عراق... ويتوقف عند القمة في تطور هذا المنحى، والتي تشكلها الأعمال الجبرية لعمر الخيام، ثم يعرض لوسائل الطوسي الهندسية التي يرتكز فيها إلى ما بدأه الخيّام والتي تتميز عن وسائل الخيام بكونها تستخدم مفاهيم تحليلية استدعتها عند الطوسي مسألة وجود الجذور لبعض المعادلات المدروسة.
