التفكير عملية نفسية عليا- تحتل مكانة فريدة كأرقى نشاط عصبي راقي Higher nervous activity يقــوم به الإنسان، فالتفكير يتربع على قمّة هرم العمليات النفسية حيث نتجه من القاعدة إلى القمّة. (عملية الإحساس ثم الإدراك ثم التخيل ثم التفكير) . ولقد مرَّ الإنسان في رحلته مع الطبيعة والمجتمع والتفكير بمراحل جعلته ينتقل من حالات وأشكال متباينة مارس فيها التفكير، وصفها العلماء بالمراحل الآتية:
1 - مرحلة التفكير الخرافي.
2- مرحلة التفكير الميتافيزيقي.
3- مرحلة التفكير الفلسفي.
4- مرحلة التفكير العلمي.
والمخ البشري أرقى وأعقد منظومة بيولوجية على الإطلاق فهو ليس عضواً بيولوجيا فحسب وإنما هو بالفعل عضو ثقافي حضاري اجتماعي كمعالج Processor عملاق يمارس التفكير كمنظومة تؤدي إلى تغير الواقع تغيراً ارتقائياً ليتغير هو ذاته في مجرى تغييره للواقع، فقد تناول علماء النفس ظاهرة التفكير من مداخل ومنطلقات متنوعة , رصدوا من خلالها أنواعاً أو أشكالاً متنوعة لظاهرة التفكير. ورغم جدِّية المحاولات العلمية في تناول التفكير,- نجد أنهم قد وضعوا فواصل وهمية مصطنعة بين أشكال وأنواع وأساليب التفكير، وحقيقة الأمر أن التفكير كمنظومة معقدة للغاية يضم جميع صور وأشكال التفكير في تفاعل منظومي مستمر وتلك الأشكال هي: - التفكير الحسي ( بصري سمعي): في مقابل التفكير المجرد.
- التفكير التكتيكي: مقابل التفكير الاستراتيجي .
- التفكير التقاربي: مقابل التفكير التباعدي. - التفكير الخطي: مقابل التفكير في علاقات غير الخطية.
- التفكير من خلال نظام مغلق ( مقيد): مقابل التفكير في منظومة متفتحة بشكل كبير.
- التفكير التحليلي: مقابل التفكير التخليقي.
- التفكير الاستنباطي: مقابل التفكير الاستقرائي.
