يشكل هذا الكتاب قراءة في الإتجاهات الفكرية التيى حكمت الرواية العربية في العصر الحديث فإذا كان النص الروائي شاهداً على عصره الذي ولد فيه، فإنه في الوقت نفسه حصيلة لواقع متحول عاشته الأمة في النصف الأول من القرن العشرين، كان للأدباء مواقفهم منه. وهو موقف ثوري بجوهره يتعلق بقضايا قومية كبرى لأنه "ينطلق أولاً وجذرياً من وعي الإنسان ووعي ضرورة هذه الحرية له.. لا من حيث هو إنسان مطلق ولا من حيث هو إنسان فرد بذاته بل من حيث هو كائن نوعي إجتماعي وتاريخي ...". هذا ما يقوله لأستاذ حسين مروة في كتابه: (دراسات نقدية في ضوء المنهج الواقعي)، وهو مقتطف من مثال يشكل مدخلاً لهذا الكتاب (البحث عن إيقاع جديد في الرواية العربية) والذي يضم بالإضافة إلى هذا المقال، محاورات ومجادلات ومقالات أدبية ضمها المؤلف أ.د. عبد الرحمن ياغي إلى هذا المنجز الذي يعكس "قضايا مطروحة ناتجة عن الحوار الهادف في الكتب والدراسات والمجلات والمؤتمرات تتضح أبعاد القضايا ولا سيما أبعاد الوحدة الثقافية العربية بسماتها الخاصة وملامحها العامة التي تؤثر وتتأثر بالظروف الموضوعية الداخلية والخارجية". وهكذا يتناول الكتاب أعمال روائية لكتّاب متفوقين يقرأ أعمالهم ويسلط الضوء على إيقاعهم الروائي ورسالتهم الفكرية أمثال حنا منية في "الشراع والعاصفة" و جبرا إبراهيم جبرا في "السفينة" ، وحليم بركات في "الرحيل" والعروي في رواية "الغربة" وسحر خليفة في روايتها "الصبار" وسالم حميش في روايته "مجنون الحكم" ... وآخرون.
