إن كتاب "القافلة" الذي وضعه الأستاذ كارلئون كون هو محاولة فذة لدراسة الشرق الأوسط، ككل عضوي واحد فلئن سبق أن درست بعض بلدان الشرق الأوسط، أو بعض حقب تاريخه، أو بعض معالمه الطبيعية أو الإجتماعية أو الإقتصادية، فلم يسبق أن وحدت هذه الدراسات كلها في نسق واحد يجمع بينها جمعاً مترابطاً، وينظر إليها من زاوية كونها مفصحة - بأوجه متعددة - عن نفس القوى الحضارية الفاعلة.
ويرى الأستاذ كون أن أهم ما يميز حضارة الشرق الأوسط أنها تتكون من نظام فسيفساني متناسق منسجم، لكل قطعة فيه دور تؤديه ووظيفة تقوم بها، وهذا النظام الفسيفسائي ذاته يقوم على أبعاد متعددة - فهناك التنوع العرقي في إنقسام المنطقة إلى عرب وإيرانيين وأكراد وأتراك وبربر وغيرهم، ثم هناك التنوع الوظيفي في إنقسام المنطقة إلى بدو وفلاحين وسكان حواضر وسكان مدن، ثم هناك التنوع السياسي في إنقسامهم إلى مناطق محكومة وأخرى مجافية للسلطة.
ويتكرر هذا النمط الفسيفسائي ذاته في كل جزء من أجزاء هذه التقسيمات كلها، ولكن هناك إلى جانب التنوع وحدة جامعة قائمة على توازن دقيق بين الأجزاء تقيمه مؤسسات كثيرة ظهرت لتمكين الكل من أداء وظيفته.
