يهتم علم النفس بدراسة السلوك الإنساني سواء كان هذا السلوك ظاهرة أم غير ظاهرة وقد تطور هذا العلم بعد أن حذا حذو العلوم التجريبية الأخرى في الأخذ بمنهج الملاحظة والاختبار، واصطناع الوسائل والاختبارات والمقاييس التي تمكن الدارسين من ملاحظة سلوك الفرد واختباره وربما ضبطه والتنبؤ به إن أمكن.
وفي هذا الكتاب يقدم المؤلفان عرضاً لتطور علم النفس من خلال حقوله النظرية والتطبيقية المتعددة التي تمت وتطورت بالتوازي مع نمو وتطور علم النفس العام، وكان للتقدم العلمي الذي حصل في شتى المجالات أثر بارز على تطور هذه الحقول ونشأتها.
وفي فصول الكتاب المتلاحقة يجد القارئ والباحث والدارس على حد سواء عرضاً مفصلاً لعلم النفس التجريبي الذي يحاول صياغة قوانين السلوك الإنساني، وعلم نفس النمو الذي يبحث في مراحل النمو المختلفة التي يمر بها الإنسان إضافة إلى علم النفس الوظائفي (الفيزيولوجي) الذي يبحث العلاقة المتبادلة بين التغيرات الوظيفية في جسم المؤلفان فصلاً موسعاً لعلم النفس الاجتماعية الذي يعني بدراسة السلوك الإنساني داخل المجتمع ويبحث في مدى تأثر هذا السلوك بالمواقف الاجتماعية والمنبهات القادمة من المجتمع.
وقد خصص المؤلفان جزءاً كبيراً من الكتاب لعلم النفس العيادي الذي يدرس اضطراب السلوك، وعلم النفس التربوي وعلم نفس العادات العامة والتقاليد والتحليل النفسي.
