هذا الكتاب هو كتاب أخبار رويت عن أعلام في ثقافتنا العربية أغلبهم من أهل الحديث الشريف كانوا يستثقلون تلاميذهم مرة، وزملاءهم مرة ثانية، ونفراً من الناس سواهما مرة ثالثة، ولكنه لا يتعرض إلى أخبار هؤلاء الثقلاء، ونوادرهم في الثقل، وكأن ما عقده ابن قتيبة المتوفي 276هـ على أخبارهم في كتابه "عيون الأخبار" قد اصبح منهجاً يتبعه ابن المرزبان، ومن جاء بعده، كابن عبد ربه في العقد الفريد". ومصنف هذا الكتاب هو محمد بن خلف بن المرزبان بن بسان المحولي، المكنى بأبي بكر، وهذه كنيته الشائعة، وهو من أسرة فارسية عرف عنها الاهتمام بالأخبار والأدب.
