كتاب النبوات يبحث في طرق إثبات النبوة، والمعجزة، والكرامة، والفرق بينها وبين خوارق العادات، وفق معتقد أهل السنة والجماعة. وفيه ردّ على المخالفين في هذا الباب؛ من أشعرية، ومعتزلة، وفلاسفة، مع ذكر مذاهبهم، وبيان أدلتهم. وقد فصّل شيخ الإسلام - رحمه الله - فيه القول، وأطال النفس: فَعَرَضَ أقوال الأشاعرة بالتفصيل، وردّ عليها. واهتمّ حين عَرْضِه لأقوال الأشاعرة، بأقوال الشخصية الثانية في المذهب الأشعري، ألا وهو القاضي أبو بكر الباقلاني، حيث انتقده في كتابه " البيان "، وردّ على أقواله، وناقشها، ومحّصها، وبيَّن مجانبتها للصواب، وكرَّ على ما بُنيت عليه هذه الأقوال من قواعد فنسفها نسفاً، ووضّح لازمها، والنتيجة التي تفضي إليها، محذّراً بذلك منها ومن اعتقادها.
وكتاب " النبوات" لم يقتصر على مباحث النبوات، والفروق بين المعجزة والكرامة، وبين ما يظهر على أيدي السحرة والكهان وأمثالهم من خوارق. بل كما هي عادة شيخ الإسلام - رحمه الله -، كان يردّ على الخصوم، ويُبيِّن المضائق والمزالق التي أودت بهم إليها أقوالهم الباطلة، ويوضّح المآزق التي أوقعتهم بها أصولهم الهابطة النازلة.
