لا تهدف الدراسة التي بين أيدينا إلى درس "اللغة والمجتمع" أو "اللغة في المجتمع" أي لا تقصد إلى دراسة تحليلية لظواهر لغوية معينة مرتبطة بظواهر اجتماعية معينة، وإنما تهدف إلى بيان الخطوط المنهجية العامة التي تصل "علم اللغة" بعلوم "المجتمع" وبخاصة الأنثربولوجيا الاجتماعية والأنثروبوجيا الثقافية وقد أفضت بالمؤلف هذه الغاية إلى تقسيم البحث إلى عدة موضوعات، عرف في أولها بعلم اللغة الاجتماعي نشأة ومنهجاً، ثم عرض لإسهام الأنثربولوجيين في الدرس اللغوي ثم تناول عدداً من مجالات البحث في علم اللغة الاجتماعية كاللغة والاتصال واللهجات الإقليمية، واللهجات الاجتماعية.
