تنعكس مشكلة (العوّق) سلباً على الأفراد الذين يعانون منها، وتجعل منهم أناساً غير فاعلين في مجتمعاتهم. وتكمن مشكلة (العوق) في صعوبة بناء العلاقة الوظيفية بين المعوقين وبيئتهم. ويحدث هذا عندما يواجهون حواجز تمنع وصولهم إلى مختلف نظم المجتمع المتاحة للمواطين الآخرين. ويعد الصم والبكم من المعوقين حسياً. وعوقهم يقع في (حاسة السمع وجهاز النطق)، مما يمنع تواصلهم مع الآخرين بسبب عدم تلقي الكلام عن طريق حاسة السمع (الأذن) وإرساله عن طريق (جهاز النطق) وهذا العوق الحسي يسبب عدد آمن من المصاعب والإنتكاسات النفسية والإجتماعية، حيث يحد هذا العوق من تفاعلهم مع البيئة الإجتماعية التي تحتضنهم.
ولأن هذه الفئة الإجتماعية من ذوي الإحتياجات الخاصة بحاجة إلى تعويض النقص الحاصل لديهم من جرّاء فقدان (حاسة السمع)، وعدم المقدرة في استخدام (جهاز النطق) يضع الباحث محمد كريم الساعدي دراسة هامة في المسرح وآليات التلقي البصري عند الصم والبكم جاءت تحت عنوان: المسرح والتلقي البصري، يبحث من خلالها إمكانية أن تتم عملية التعويض من خلال التواصل البصري وذلك عن طريق أدوات ذات وسائل فاعلة تدخل في دعم وتطوير هذا الجانب لديهم. ومن الأدوات المهمة التي تستطيع برأي المؤلف أن تقدم شيئاً في هذا المجال هو (المسرح)، وذلك لاحتوائه على مجموعة من الأهداف المندمجة التي تستطيع المساهمة في تفعيل وتطوير الجانب البصري عند الصم والبكم، على اعتبار أن المسرح وسيلة من وسائل التعليم التي تقدم تجربة قصدية متكاملة للمتلقي (المتعلم)، وكذلك يعد المسرح وسيلة للمتعة والترفيه ... للمتلقي (المتعلم)، ما عدا كونه وسيلة للمتعة والترفيه ...
