لم تحظ سيرةٌ شعبيةٌ أو ملحمةٌ فروسيةٌ بشهرة وإهتمام شعبي كسيرة "بني هلال" حتى إنَّ بعضّ المؤرخين قسِّمها إلى أجزاء وسمي الجزء الثاني "تغريبة بني هلال" لأن أصلهم ومنشأهم كان في "اليمن" وهم من العرب القيسية.
وتروي السيرةُ أنَّ "بني هلال" انتقلوا من "اليمن" إلى "الحجاز" خلال هجرة القبائل العربية اليمنية إلى الشمال، وانتسبوا هناك إلى الأشراف من خلال "خضرة الشريفة" بنت شريف "مكة".
ثم انتقلوا إلى "مصر" واستوطئوها، ومنهم من ارتحل إلى "الشام" وتُحدِّثنا المصادرُ التاريخيةُ أنَّ "المستنصر بالله الفاطمي" عندما ثار عليه أهل "تونس" أرسل إليهم "بني هلال" لتأديبهم فذهبوا إلى "القيروان" وحاصروها زمناً طويلاً، ثم فتوحها ودمروها، وقد رثاها الشاعر الأندلسي "ابن رشيق" القيرواني "في قصيدة له...
لقد طاف "بنو هلال" في جميع أقطار الوطن العربي تقريباً، وشاركت معظم الشعوب العربية في حفظ وتدوين سيرتهم وتراثهم، وأنشد الشعراءُ العاميون العرب في كل الأقطار قصائدهم، وأضافوا إليها ما كانوا يرونه مناسباً لبطولاتهم وفروسيتهم وأخلاقهم العربية على مر العصور، ومن هنا جاءت ملحمتهم في "سيرة بني هلال".
