يتولى هذا الكتاب، ومن خلال تحديد البنية المعرفية للكلام الجديد، تبيين مفهوم التجديد في الكلام، وإيضاح العلاقة بين الكلام الجديد والكلام الكلاسيكي. ولا شك أن ذلك يتوقف عليه التمييز بين الكلام الجديد والإلهيات المسيحية المعاصرة، وفلسفة الدين، والمعطيات لأبحاث الدين كما ويتولى الكتاب تناول الهوية المعرفية للكلام الجديد عبر قضيتين هما: ما هو علم الكلام؟ وماذا يعني التجديد فيه؟ وعلى أساس هذين السؤالين يتحرك البحث حول البنية المعرفية لهذا العلم في حقلين أساسيين.
ومن خلال تسليطه الضوء على جملة من المشاكل المنهجية في الفكر الكلامي المعاصر أوضح الفجوة القائمة بين الكلام المعاصر في المستوى الإثباتي والكلام الجديد. إلى جانب هذا تولى الكتاب استعراض مجموعة من أهم المسائل الكلامية الجديدة، كالعلاقة بين العلم والدين، والإيمان والوحي والتجربة الدينية، ولغة الدين، والدين والدنيا، تحديد بنية المسائل الكلامية المعاصرة. ويتولى الموضوع الذي جاء في القسم الثالث من الكتاب بحث واحدة من النظريات النفسية المهمة في تحليل أسباب التروع إلى الدين وتبعاته، وهو يقدن بذلك نموذجاً لمنهج تلك الموضوعات الكلامية والمعطيات التي تقوم عليها أسس التحليل فيها، بغية التعريف بحدود التحليلات الكلامية الجديدة عملياً.
