يتضمن هذا الكتاب دراسة في الإمام سليمان الطوفي الحنبلي (657هـ- 1257م- 716هـ- 1316م) كأصولي وفقيه، والأثر الذي تركَه في مجال الفقه، من خلال دراسةمقارنة بين فقهه وفقه غيره من العلماء، وأهم آرائه في بعض أبواب الفقه.
يذكر مؤلف الكتاب أن الإمام الطوفي درس الفقه على مذهب الإمام أحمد بن حنبل.. فكان من أعلم فقهاء عصره باتفاق الفقهاء واختلافهم، حتى بلغ رتبة الإجتهاد، وكان من العلماء البارزين في علوم العربية وقواعدها، ومن مشاهير الشعراء، ومن القلائل الذين دافعوا عن العربية، وتنبهوا إلى الخطر الذي سيلحق بالعربية من جراء تسلم عناصر اجنبية لزمام الحكم في البلاد العربية كالمقول في العراق، والمماليك في سوريا ومصر...
جاءت الدراسة في ثلاثة أبواب رئيسية: خصص الباب الأول لعصر الطوفي ويضم ثلاثة فصول: الأول منها بحث في الحالة السياسية في عصر الطوفي- عصر المماليك، ودورهم أثناء الغزو والمقولي والصليبي، أما الثاني فكرَس للحالة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية، وأما الثالث فقد جعله الكاتب للحديث عن الحياة الدينية والثقافية. وأما الباب الثاني فخصص لحياة الطوفي ويضم ثلاثة فصول: بحث الأول في سيرته، وكرس الثاني للحديث عن المحنة التي وقعت له في القاهرة في سجنه وعزله عن التدريس، وتحدث الفصل الثالث عن آثاره العلمية، مؤلفاته، وأهم ما ترجموا لحياته. ويأتي الباب الثالث والأخير لدراسة فقه الطوفي بالاعتماد على (العرض والاستدلال على نصوص القرآن والسنة النبوية، ثم على أقوال الصحابة والتابعين والأئمة المجتهدين) وقد جعله المؤلف في ثلاثة فصول: خصص الأول منها لدراسة رأيه في المصلحة المرسلة باعتبارها أهم ما اشتهر بها. أما الفصل الثاني فتضمن رأي الطوفي: في الإجماع، وقانونه في التفسير، ورأيه في المعرب في القرآن وطريقته في التأليف، وفي الفصل الثالث؛ بيان آرائه في عدة مسائل فقهية ونماذج لآرائه وفتاويه سواء منها وما وافق مذهبه الحنبلي، أم خالفه، أم وافق المذاهب الإسلامية الأخرى...
