يرى علماء النفس إن المريض النفسي يشغل نفسه بحالته ويكون عنده مشكلة وجودية مما يصرف نظره عن التفكير بأمور أخرى، ويتميز المرضى النفسيون بعدن قدرتهم على التكليف مع المحيط الذي يعيشون فيه فيبدو كل ذلك بشكل انحراف في السلوك لديهم، مما يستوجب التوقف عند حالتهم وتحلي لمظاهر وأسباب الألم والمعاناة التي تظهر على المريض النفسي. ويقوم علم النفس المرضي على عدد من النظريات التي يفسر من خلالها خالة المريض ويجد العلاج له، إضافة إلى أنه يشخص ما يعاني منه المريض ويساعده على فهم نفسه.
وكطبيب نفساني خبير في علاج حالات مرضية متعددة يقدم الدكتور حسين هاشمي خلاصة تجربته وخبرته عبر استعراض الحالات التي مرت عليها، ويرصد من خلالها حالات مرضاه، إذ نستعرض على سبيل المثال شخصية الطفلة (ترانه) التي أخضعها لاختبار الشخصية الخاص بالأطفال والناشئة دون السادسة عشرة من العمر والذي يحدد جميع خصائص شخصياتهم وقد توصل من خلال ذلك إلى أنها مصابة بحالة تدعى "هوس شد الشعر" وهي حالة بفرزها الاكتئاب. وكان سبب اكتئابها يعود إلى طلاق أبويها كما يعرض لحالة الزوجة التي لاحظت تأخر زوجها في العودة إلى الدار مساءً كما تنبهت إلى تغير سلوكه، إلى أن اكتشفت أن وراء هذه التغيرات سيدة أخرى، حتى شدت الرجال إلى مسقط رأسها تاركة زوجها وداره وبعد أن تخلت عنه السيدة الأخرى عثر عليها في أحد الأيام جثة هامدة في إحدى الطرق وعلى بعد عدة أمتار منه سيارة سوداء منقلبة، ومن خلال تحليل شخصية الزوجة توصل الدكتور هاشمي إلى أنها ربما أساءت أداء دورها في حياتها الأسرية، وقد دفعت صراحة السيدة (الوقورة جداً) زوجها لقضاء جل أوقاته خارج الدار.
