هذا الكتاب جزء من مجموعة تهدف الى تعريف القارىء العربي بالفكر والأدب الهولندي بالذات, وذلك في إطار محاولة سد ثغرة معرفية هامة في علاقتنا بالآخر, إذ كان للتجربة الاستشراقية الهولندية دور كبير وهام في تشكيل الوعي الغربي فيما يتعلق بالتفاعل ما بين الشرق والغرب. وقد أفرزت التجربة الهولندية العديد من الأسماء التي كان لها أثر عميق على المسيرة التطورية للفكر الغربي. وتقع أحداث هذه الرواية الآسرة في ملقة, وهي منطقة مألوفة بالنسبة للكاتبة التي عاشت الخمسة والعشرين سنة التي تلت زواجها بين كثير من المدن والبلدات في ملقة وعلى جزيرة جاوة. رسمت ماريا اعتماداً على ذكرياتها الغنية وعلى معرفتها العميقة بالفولكلور والعادات الإندونيسية صورة لا تنسى عن فيليسيا وجدتها, إمرأتان قويتان تديران عملهما الخاص وتربيان هيمبيز ابن فيليسيا الرضيع. يجتاح القصة تيار مشؤوم من العنف. أجبرت فيليسيا عندما قتل همبيز الراشد كجندي على يد السكان المحليين, على مواجهة الحقيقة المروعة للعنف والموت. وعبرت عن حزنها لموت ابنها بطقس شخصي من استعادة الذكريات عنه وعن غيره ممن ماتو بعنف على هذه الجزيرة, بمن فيهم من تعرفهم فقط عن طريق التاريخ المروي للجزيرة. أحيت فيليسيا سنوياً ذكرى من ماتوا عن طريق فعل رمزي تحول في النهاية إلى احتفال بالحياة.
