إن قوانين العلم لا تجيز لأي كان، وحتى انطلاقا من أنبل رغبة أخلاقية المساس بمعنى نص من النصوص، بحيث يسلخ عن أي جملة أدنى قدر من معناها الجلي، ليجعلها ترضخ لمذهب مبيت بإعطائها معان مختلفة عن معانيها المحددة والواضحة انحيازا لذلك المذهب، بحيث يصبح العلم أمرا هامشيا تحت وطأة المواقف السلفية التي تمتلك من وجهة نظرها يقينا أعلى من أي يقين. ومهما بلغت تلك المحاولات من براعة لنفي التناقضات الموجودة في نص ما، فإن تلك المحاولات وتلك الطرق لا يمكن أخذها بعين الاعتبار من وجهة النظر العلمية. إلا أن الفكر الإنساني ما برح ناشطا في إطاري العقلي والنقل، والتساؤل عن لقائهما، بل عن افتراقهما وتنابذهما. وفي هذا المجال يندرج هذا الكتاب الجاد إذ يقرن، مثلا، المثالية المسيحية بمثالية الحكمة الرواقية. وقد تعمق مؤلف الأخلاق المسيحية بتحليل أخلاق الأناجيل من الزاوية السوسيولوجية، أي العلمية، وهي لا تمس سحر الكتاب المقدس، بل تبرز حياته، وتعقده الفاتن.
