في يوم من الأيام علمت أن العلم لم يكن حقيقياً، لا أستطيع تذكر ذلك اليوم ولكني أتذكر اللحظة، إله القرن العشرين لم يعد إلهاً.
كان هناك خطأ، وكل من عمل في مجال العلم يبدو أنه ارتكبه، لقد قالوا إن كل الأشياء هي صادقة أو كاذبة، لم يكونوا متأكدين دائماً أي الأشياء صادقة وأي الأشياء كاذبة، ولكنهم كانوا متأكدين من أن كل الأشياء إما صادقة أو كاذبة، كان بإمكانهم القول ما إذا كان العشب أخضر، أو ما إذا كانت الذرات تدور، أو ما إذا كان عدد البحيرات في ميين صحيحاً أم لا، صحة هذه الإدعاءات لها نفس صحة إدعاءات الرياضيات والمنطق، كانت كل هذه الإدعاءات إما صادقة برمتها أو كاذبة برمتها، إما سوداء أو بيضاء، إما أن تساوي 1 أو أن تساوي 0.
في حقيقة الأمر، كانت المسألة تتعلق بالدرجة، كل الحقائق كانت مسائل تتعلق بالدرجة، كانت الحقائق دائماً غامضة أو غير دقيقة لدرجة ما، الرياضيات فقط كانت أبيض أو أسود كانت نظام قوانين وضعية ورموز فحسب.
يتعامل العلم مع الحقائق الرمادية أو المرنة وكأنها حقائق الرياضيات البيضاء أو السوداء، ومع هذا لم يستطع أحد أن يعلن أنّ صدق حقيقة واحدة عن العالم أنها كانت %100 صادقة أو %100 كاذبة، لقد اكتفوا بالقول إن هذه الحقائق كانت كذلك.
كان هذا هو الخطأ، وظهرت معه درجة جديدة من الشك، يمكن أن يخطئ العلماء على مستوى المنطق والرياضيات، ويمكنهم أن يتبنوا ذلك الخطأ بكل عظمة وفداحة الإثم الديني.
