هذا البحث الذي نقدمه للقارئ العربي هو، بالدرجة الأولى، بمثابة مقدمة نتمنى أن نسهم من خلالها في تجديد النقاش الفكري حول موضوع العلمانية، نظراً لما للموضوع من قيمة معرفية وسوسيولوجية في هذا الظرف التاريخي الصعب، أين صارت أبسط الحقوق الإنسانية - في البيئة العربية - ورقة ضغط في أيدي قوى ظلامية تعبث بها كما تشاء.
هذا الزمن الذي تراجعت فيه العديد من القوى والمؤسسات السياسية الإقليمية والدولية عن دورها الإجتماعي والسياسي لتؤيد إختيارات أيديولوجية مغلقة أو توفر لها، أحياناً اخرى، الغطاء والدعم.
كما نعتقد في فترات ماضية أن البعض من الكتاب العرب يرفض الدفاع عن المشروع العلماني على قاعدة أنه يمتلك قناعات أعمق وتحفظات قد سجلها عن تجارب غيرنا من المجتمعات، ولكن بمجرد أن قمنا بقراءة ما كتب عربياً حول الموضوع صدمتنا الخيبة، وأدركنا بشكل لا يقبل الظن أنه بسبب قيمة الموضوع الإجتماعية والسياسية صار الكثير يفكر في تركه سجين الفهم الخاطئ أو يقدمه على أنه طرح تجاوزه الزمن ويدعو إلى إستبداله بإختبارات أخرى، او ربما أيضاً قد يتسرع البعض الآخر في الحكم عليه ولا ينتبه إلى كونه مشروعاً أهمّ ما يميزه تعدد النماذج.
لا يمكن أن نقارب موضوع العلمانية إلا ووجدنا أنفسنا نناقش موضوع السلطة، ونحن لا نعني بذلك السلطة في شكلها السياسي، فحسب، والتي قد يسميها بعضنا الدولة أو الحكومة أو المؤسسة الرسمية، بل هي تعني كذلك تلك القدرة السحرية أو القوة الممنوحة لموضوع ما أو تصور معين ومن ثم سيطرته على قرارتنا وإختياراتنا بحيث تصبح كل إرادة أو محاولة لمخالفته مرفوضة.
