هذا الكتاب هو الثاني من سلسلة الكتب التي تصدرها الجمعية العلمية السورية بعد الكتاب الأول (أسس لغات البرمجة). تختار الجمعية هذه الكتب من بين أحدث الكتب العالمية في المعلوماتية تترجمها وتقدمها للقارئ العربي منسجمة بذلك مع أهدافها الرئيسية. يشتمل الكتاب على أحدث التطورات في هندسة البرمجيات، هذا الاسم الذي حل محله سابقة "البرمجيات". ذلك أن هذا النوع من المعلوماتية الذي يتعلق بإجرائية البرمجيات وطرائف هندستها وأدواتها هو أقرب إلى الهندسة من العلوم الأخرى.
عالج هذا الكتاب في خمسة أبواب المواضيع التالية: المنتج والإجرائية، إدارة المشاريع البرمجية، طرائف تقليدية لهندسة البرمجيات. هندسة البرمجيات الغرفية التوجه، موضوعات متقدمة في هندسة البرمجيات. وبسبب فخامة هذا الكتاب، إذ يربو عدد مفتاحه على ألف صفحة، وجدنا من المناسب أن نصدره في مجلدين كي يسهل جعله وتناوله. والمجلد الذي بين يديك هو المجلد الأول. أنا نرجو أن تساعد هذه السلسلة من الكتب على فهم أفضل لمواضيع المعلوماتية، وأن تيسر المعرفة لطالبيها.
