حينما بدأ الإنسان الأول في عصره السابق للتاريخ يرسم ويصور على جدران الكهوف، لم يكن مدفوعاً إلى ذلك دفعاً آلياً، بل لا بد أن يكون قد أحس من أعماقه بشعور باطن، إذ أدار عينيه فيما حوله في الأرض والبحر والسماء، فرأى أشياء بعضها جامد، وبعضها متحرك، بعضها ساكن كالجبال، وبعضها غير ساكن كالإنسان والحيوان، فوقف ينظر ويتأمل، ويفكر مستفسراً عن هذا الكيان الذي يحيط به، وما حوى هذا الكون من أسرار.
هذه الكواكب اللامعة، وهذه الأشجار المختلفة، وهذه المياه المتدفقة، وهذه الجبال الشامخة وهذه الورود اليانعة، كل ذلك وقف أمامه الإنسان في بداية حياته ذاهلاً حائراً، ولكنه ما لبث أن شملته الروعة وأذهلته، وجذبته أسرار الطبيعة وحيرته، فإذا به يجد نفسه فيما يحيط به مأخوذاً به مندمجاً فيه.
وهنا بدأت يقظته، وولد فكره، وتحرك إحساسه، وسار هذا الإنسان في طريقه إلى الحياة يلمس ويرى، ويقلد ويبدع، وكان إحساسه بالحياة، وبما فيها من أسرار وشؤون، هو بداية ما ألهمته الطبيعة وعلمته من أسرارها وجمالها، فساقه الإندماج إلى التفكير والإنشغال بتمثيل ما يرى ويشاهد متدرجاً من التقليد إلى الإبداع والإبتكار.
وهكذا بدأت معرفته للفن، وأخذت السنون في إعداده، وتفتح عقله، وصقل ذهنه، وعملت الحياة على تزويده بالمعرفة آونة بعد أخرى، وتأهيله للفن خطوة بعد خطوة، والفن هو مقدار ما أدرك الإنسان في البداية من معنى الجمال وما أحس به من حسن في كل ما لمسه ورآه، لقد كان التعبير عن الفن في أول معرفة الإنسان به تخطيطاً وتشكيلاً، ومحاكاة ساذجة فطرية تتمشى مع مداركه، وتتجاوب وفقاً لعوامل بيته.
والإنسان الأول نقل ما رأى من مظاهر الحياة نقلاً سطحياً، ثم أخذ يأنس إلى ما يشاهده ويراه حتى شغل ذلك الفراغ ذهنه، وبث فيه لذة متجددة لازمته حتى أصبحت عاملاً في وجوده وملهمة له، وقد دفعه ذلك إلى أن يرسم ويحاكي ما حوله من مظاهر، حتى إذا ما وجد نفسه يعيش في الكهوف والمغاور بعيداً عن مظاهر هذه الطبيعة، عز عليه أن يحرم من تلك المشاهد التي أنس إليها، وذلك الجمال الذي ألفه، وتم له ذلك بأن صور ما كان يثير إعجابه على جدران الكهف ومن هنا بدأ أساس الفن.
