اختلفت الآراء وتخالفت المذاهب والنظريات العلمية لدى الباحثين والمؤرخين في أصل الشطرنج حتى لقد ذهب بعض غير المتخصصين إلى الأساطير والخرافات. وفي هذا الإطار يأتي هذا الكتاب الذي يضم بحثاً يدور حول الدراسات التي تناولت أصل الشطرنج وهي وإن لم تخرج عن فرضية الأصل الهندي، على النحو المفترض في هذا الكتاب كله، فإن اختلافها الوحيد عما سواها هو في تاريخ اختراع هذا الفن الذي لن يتعدى في هذا البحث، القرن السادس الميلادي، وهو البحث الذي عاد بذلك التاريخ إلى القرن الثاني الميلادي.
ومن خلال إلقاء الضوء على المواضيع التي تطرق إليها المؤلف حول تاريخ الشطرنج نجد أنه تناول أولاً الجذور التاريخية للشطرنج: الهند، فارس، ليعالج بعد ذلك ما جاء في الشطرنج في الدين واللغة، ليتابع تطور هذه اللعبة خلال حقبات تاريخية من الراشدين إلى الأمويين والعباسيين والرشيد وشارلمان وهكذا إلى ما بعد العباسيين، مستقصياً تاريخ الشطرنج في الشام ومصر ثم في شمالي أفريقيا والأندلس وصولاً إلى أوروبا مستعرضاً من ثم الكتب والمقالات التي دارت حوله.
