هذا كتاب "الاستيعاب في معرفة الأصحاب" للحافظ الكبير، والعالم النحرير، أبي عمر يوسف بن عبد الله بن محمد بن عبد البر المالكي، وهو كتاب جليل مفيد، وضعه صاحبه لمعرفة الذين نقلوا السنن عن نبينا صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى الناس كافة، وحفظوها عليه، وبلغوها عنه، فأدوها ناصحين محسنين، حتى كمل بما نقلوه الدين، وثبتت بهم حجة الله على المسلمين.
وتأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب من جهة أن مصنفه كان قد برع وتقدم في علم الأثر، وتبصر بالفقه والمعاني، كما أن له بسطة كبيرة في علم النسب والأخبار، كما قال تلميذه الحافظ أبو علي الغساني.
وقد جمع الحافظ ابن عبد البر في هذا الكتاب من صحت صحبته للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وكثرت مجالسته له، ومن لقيه لكية واحدة مؤمناً به، أو رآه رؤية، أو سمع منه لفظة فأداها عنه، كما ذكر فيه من ولد على عهده صلى الله عليه وسلم من أبوين مسلمين، فدعا له، أو نظر إليه وبارك عليه، ونحو هذا، ومن كان مؤمناً به قد أدى الصدقة إليه ولم يرد عليه.
وكتاب "الاستيعاب" أصل من أصول كتب الصحابة، وهو الأصول الأربعة التي بنى عليها العلامة النسابة عز الدين ابن الأثير كتابه الجليل "أسد الغابة في معرفة الصحابة" والأصول الثلاثة الباقية هي: "معرفة الصحابة" لأبي نعيم الأصبهاني، و"معرفة الصحابة" لابن منده، وذيله لأبي موسى المديني.
