كتاب "التوهم" كتاب طريف في بابه قد بُني على أساس في الدين والتصوف معروف، وهو "الخوف والرجاء" أو "الترغيب والترهيب" وقد نوه بهذا الأساس القرآن الكريم، فقد خوف حتى أرعب؛ فقال تعالى: (إن بطش ربك لشديد) وأمَّل حتى طمأن فقال: (قل يا عبادي الَّذين أسرفُوا على أنفسهِمْ لاَ تَقْنَطُوا من رحمةِ الله إن الله يغفرُ الذنوب جميعاً)، وكان من قبيل الترهيب ما ورد فيه من وصف النار وعذابها وفظائعها، ومن قبيل الترغيب ما ورد فيه من وصف الجنة ونعيمها وهنائها.
وكذلك الحديث كان فيه النوعان، وتعادلت فيه الكفتان، ففي الصحيحين عن أنس قال خطب رسول صلى الله عليه وسلم خطبة ما سمعت مثلها قط، فقال: لو تعلمون ما أعلم لضحكتم قليلاً ولبكيتم كثيراً، فغطى أصحاب رسول الله وجوههم ولهم خنين.
ونهج المسلمون هذا النهج من وعاظ وقصاص ومتصوفة، فكان مما كتبه على هذا الأساس المحاسبي في كتابه "التوهم"؛ غير أنه نحا فيه منحى طريفاً يدل عليه اسمه، فلم يقتصر على ما ورد من الأخبار في الخوف والرجاء كما فعل غيره، بل استعمل توهمه؛ وبعبارة أخرى خياله، في وصف شعور أهل الجنة وأهل النار وما يلقون من سعادة وشقاء ونعيم وعذاب، وأسلس لخياله القياد فتخيل ما تخيل، وصوَّر ما صوَّر، فهي لوحة جميلة لفنان أجاد ألوانها، أو رواية رائعة لكاتب جمَّل مناظرها، وفصَّل مواقفها، وصقل لغتها حتى يؤثر بالحقيقة التي تتضمنها في نفوس القارئين والسامعين أكبر الأثر وأبلغه.
