يعدّ "كتاب التوابين" للإمام موفق الدين أبي محمد عبد الله بن قدامة المقدسي الجماعيلي الصالحي الدمشقي فقيه عصره في مذهب إمام أهل السنّة والجماعة الإمام أحمد بن حنبل، يعدّ من الكتب القليلة التي صنّفها أهل السنّة والجماعة الإمام أحمد بن حنبل، يعد من الكتب القليلة التي صنّفها العلماء المتقدمون في ذكر قصص وأخبار التوابين من الناس من الناس من عهد آدم عليه السلام، وإلى العصور المتأخرة مقرونة بالأسانيد من مؤلفه إلى راوي القصة أو الخبر، الأمر الذي يجعلها ذوات أصول أصيلة بغضّ النظر عن صحة الأسانيد أو ضعفها وانقطاعها.
وقد تلقى العلماء هذا النوع من التصانيف بالرضى والقبول مع التحفظ في رواية قصصها وأخبارها إلاّ بعد التثبت من سلامتها من الدّخيل المقحم على تراثنا العلمي من قبل المغرضين ومن سلك مسالكهم واقتضى آثارهم.
ولما كانت لهذا الكتاب تلك الصفة المحببة إلى قلوب الخاصة، اتجهت أنظار كل من محمود الأرناؤوط وحسن مروه، نحو اختصاره بالاقتصار على حذف الأسانيد مقتصرين على ذكر راوي القصة أو الخبر أو من دعت الحاجة إلى ذكره فقط، والعناية بمتنه وحواشيه. وكان اعتمادهم في ذلك على الطبعة الصادرة منه عام 1389هـ بدمشق بتحقيق وتعليق والد الشيخ عبد القادر الأرناؤوط. وقد حافظا على تعليقاته القيّمة على الكتاب وختماها بحرف (ع) لكي يسهل أمر الوقوف عليها على القرار وميزا إضافاتهما بوضعها بين حاصرتين، وأضافا إلى تعليقاته عدداً من التعليقات التي تعين جماهير القراء على فهم الكتاب حقّ الفهم ولا تجعل شيئاً من النص مستغلفاً عليهم وقاما بالتعريف بالأعلام الوارد ذكرهم في الكتاب باقتضاب، وضبطا ما رأيا أنه بحاجة إلى ضبط من الألفاظ، وفصلا نصوص المتن والحواشي.
