لقد مر علم التجويد كسائر العلوم بمراحل نشاته الى يومنا هذا، وخدمه كثير من المحققين والباحثين، وصار علم التجويد مقدمة لعلم القراءات ومدخلاً له، لقد اسهم في التاليف بعلم التجويد اهل اللغة والبيان، وكذلك اهل الاتقان من مجودي القرآن، ومن هؤلاء الامام ابن الجزري، فقد نظم التجويد في منظومة اسماها "المقدمة فيما يجب على قارئه ان يعلمه"، استوفى فيها امهات المسائل التي ان ينبغي لكل مجود ان يلم بها، ثم جاء الشيخ البقري سليل ابن الجزري في القراءة فالف هذا الكتاب وسماه "غنية الطالبين ومنية الراغبين" وعرف فيما بعد بالمقدمة البقرية، اسوة بالمقدمة الجزرية، وان كانت الاخيرة نظماً وهذا نثراً، سار البقري فيها على نهج ابن الجزري في ترتيب الفصول وسرد المسائل، وهو قد اشار الى ذلك في عدة مواضع من كتابه هذا لكنه توسع في بسط الموضوعات اكثر من ابن الجزري، وذكر اقوالاً متعددة لاهل العلم، وناقش المسائل ، وتحدث عن تاريخ الرسم وكتابة المصحف، وزاد بحوثاً اخرى مثل الوقف على كلا وبلى، وهو مالم يذكره ابن الجزري في نظمه.
