يتم، عموماً، التعرف على تاريخ الإمبراطورية العثمانية من مطالعة سلسلة الوقائع السياسية والعسكرية، مع أنه، لفهم أ؛داث ووقائع التاريخ فهماً عميقاً وجيداً، يترتب دراسة البنية الداخلية والأنظمة الحقوقية والاقتصادية، والإدارية التي تسود مختلف فئات الشعب، وأشكال العلاقة بين الشعب والحكومة. ولقد بوشر مؤخراً بهذه الدراسات للبنية الداخلية. وكلما كثرت مثل هذه الدراسات، فإنها ستبين لنا أن الضائقات التي تمر بالبلاد لمختلف الأسباب تؤثر في سياسة الحكومة، وتضطرها للخروج على النظم والقوانين السائدة، فتعمد إلى إجراءات تضغط بها على الشعب في مختلف المجالات، مما يؤدي، بالتالي، إلى أن يخرج الشعب معترضاً على الحكومة وإجراءاتها. وهكذا تظهر لنا حقيقة علاقة الشعب بالحكومة عارية واضحة.
يعتبر موضوع الإسكان والتوطين أحد المواضيع التي يجب دراساتها إلى جانب المواضيع التي ذكرناها أعلاه. وبهذه الدراسة نستطيع أن نكتشف كيف تشكل التاريخ الاجتماعي للإمبراطوريةى العثمانية، وأن نعرف العوامل البشرية للانتشار والتوسع، وكيف انقلبت الأرتضي الجرداء إلى أراضٍ معمورة بعد فترة قصيرة، وكيف تمت الاستفادة من مختلف أساليب الإسكان في تتريك البقاع المفتوحة حديثاً، وما هو مصير الفاتحين الأصلاء للبلدان المفتوحة بعد أن أكملوا مهماتهم العسكرية، كما سنبين وجود الدراويش المرافقين للجنود الفاتحين.
