إن هذا الاهتمام بالنخلة من دون سائر الأشجار يستدعي الانتباه، فقد ورد ذكرها في القرآن الكريم في ثلاث وعشرين آية. إن التمر يمتاز من بين الفواكة بثلاث: فهو فاكهة، وهو حلوى، وهو غذاء. ذكر أهل الآثار: أن من نعم الله جل جلاله على بني إسرائيل أن الرجل منهم كان ينثر كفاً من القمح بباب داره، فيحصل له من القمح ما يعيش به سنته، وتكون له الزيتونة فيعصر منها أيضاً ما يكفيه سنته.
والذي يمعن النظر يجد أن نعمته جل جلاله على العرب بالنخيل أعظم من ذلك، ولولاها لساء حال الكثير منهم -لاسيما الفقراء-. إنه يقطف التمر فيجعل منه (خلالا) يتفكه به طيلة سنته، ويكبسه فيكون طعامه خلال السنة كلها، ويستخرج منه الدبس للغذاء، فهو عسل النخل.
وليس هذا فقط عطاء النخلة، بل سعفها يستعمل لكثير من النصاعات البدائية كالحصر وغيرها، مضافاً إلى الوقود وجذعها سقفاً للبيوت، وجسراً على الأنهار الصغيرة، إلى أمور أخرى كثيرة. وستقرأ في هذا الكتاب منافع كثيرة للنخلة ذكرها المؤلف.
كما ذكراً أيضاً موطن النخلة، والحث على عرس النخيل، حلوى التمر، أنواع التمور.
